It’s official! Control of women's and girls' single-sex spaces in Christchurch, NZ, is no longer in the hands of women and girls.

 The Christchurch City Council in New Zealand has gradually been eroding women’s and girls’ rights to single-sex spaces over the last few years. Now, they have sealed it with their new Equity and Inclusion Policy , which replaces some older policies. The new policy fails to include ‘sex’ in the categories it serves, which are “ age, gender, disability, ethnicity, culture, faiths, geographical location, sexual orientation, neurodiversity or socio-economic status”. The committee which put this policy together saw fit to have the word ‘gender’ amongst the categories, but not ‘sex’, even though gender is slippery to define. Despite several submissions to the committee requesting inclusion of the word ‘sex’, an open letter to the Council which made a judicious case for that, plus individual emails to all to the councillors, the word ‘sex’ was not included, and the policy was adopted by the Council without it on 6 th March this year. Lies are no way to live - except when the Psychotherapists Assn of NZ tell their members to do it, or else.

  I was talking to my terf friend, Sarah Henderson, from  Mana Wāhine Kōrero  (Sovereign Women Speak) the other day about language. Sarah’s deeply interested in linguistics, and we’ve had a long and fascinating  chat  on YouTube about this before. Amongst other things in that chat, she talked about how language ‘codes’ our brains into thinking in certain ways. So, when I raised the subject of what it might do to women and girls mental and emotional health to have our language erased in favour of being called things like ‘cervix havers’, ‘the birthing parent’, ‘those who menstruate’, or ‘people who go through menopause’, as just a few examples, Sarah knew exactly where I was coming from. Why is the video of Mana Wāhine Kōrero’s oral submission against the Midwifery Council’s revised Scope of Practice being withheld from public viewing?

  In an extraordinary move, the NZ Parliament Petitions Committee has decided to withhold the videoed oral submission made against the Midwifery Council’s revised Scope of Practice by Māori women’s group Mana Wāhine Kōrero (Sovereign Women Speak) from public viewing. The Petitions Committee , who “ oversees and coordinates the petitions process, and considers petitions and any related matters ”, has advised of this decision without explanation. Conversely, they have made the videoed oral submissions by the Midwifery Council and midwife Deb Hayes, who was the initiator of the petition against Midwifery Council’s revised Scope of Practice, available for public viewing. The Committee invited Deb and two groups - Mana Wāhine Kōrero and the Midwifery Council - to make oral submissions to them about the petition, which had collected almost 7,500 signatures.
